We got a dog when our youngest kiddo turned four. We thought it made sense – all the kids were old enough to care for a dog, I was done dealing with human poop, and we figured the dog would live until around the last child left for university. All sensible planning.
Ozzy has been a delight. He’s well trained and well loved. He has managed beautifully in our busy and loud household.
Here’s the thing. He’s being SO weird during Covid19.
I’ve been so busy thinking about the kids and how they’re managing through all this, and now I’m realizing that my dog has also been impacted.
He quickly got accustomed to having all of his humans around all of the time. Even the kids who live away from home at University are around – and this dog is loving every minute of it. When some of the children are at work or out of the house, the dog seems to pine for them. He wants all of his humans close to him. If I'm honest, he has become a little needy and high maintenance for my taste!
And now there is a new development.
As our social bubble has opened a bit, we have had the odd friend come by the backyard. We even recently let our boys bring a friend each to the cottage. The dog is clearly not impressed with people who are not HIS being in our space.
If a little friend tries to engage with Ozzy, he’ll look grumpy and walk away. He is not having it. So not only is he wanting the people in his bubble to stay close, he wants everyone else OUT of our bubble!
I know that "quarantine puppies" have become a trend and so many are welcoming new pets into their lives. Those of us who have had our fur babies for years are also dealing with a whole new family dynamic.
Have you noticed any strange behaviour by your dog or pet during this time? I can’t be the only one.
